Individual Therapy Sessions

Prior to scheduling an initial evaluation with a new client, we take great care in making an optimal match between therapist and client. In our efforts to address the client’s difficulties in the most efficient and empirically based approach, we provide the options of individual treatment alone or in conjunction with group sessions.

Group Therapy Sessions

Group therapy can be a stand-alone service, or more often, combined with individual therapy sessions. Our objective is to place clients in a group that best fits their needs and circumstances such as age, specific issues, length of time in treatment, and goals, thus providing a group environment that is safe, supportive and effective for addressing their needs and goals.

Group therapy helps our clients develop awareness of how they impact and are perceived by others within the group and in the outside world. Participants learn skills to express themselves to others and to listen constructively. Most of our groups meet once weekly and are typically 60-75 minutes in length.

Types of Evidence-Based Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy – Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps a patient understand the thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviors. Our psychologists use CBT to treat a wide range of disorders ranging from phobias and addictions to depression and anxiety.
  • CBT-I (Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia) CBT-I is a short, structured evidence-based approach to manage symptoms of insomnia. It is highly effective and is recommended as a first-line treatment for insomnia in adults by the American College of Physicians. It requires 6-8 sessions and often works better than medication. For our younger patients, we have developed a sleep protocol guided by these same evidence-based principles. Our psychologists can customize a sleep plan for individuals across the lifespan.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) –  Our psychologists use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients fundamentally change their relationship with painful thoughts and feelings, to live in the present through “mindfulness,” and to create a rich and meaningful life through actions that are guided by their deepest values. ACT is proven to help clients with a wide spectrum of problems ranging from work stress to depression.
  • Mindfulness Training – Mindfulness is a mental state of awareness, focus and openness which allows people to be fully engaged in what they are doing at any moment. Our psychologists use Mindfulness Training to teach our clients psychological skills that help them deal with painful thoughts and feelings effectively.

The aim of therapy at Psychological Health Collaborative is to be short term with specific behavioral goals while creating a collaborative relationship with any outside professionals. We also provide referrals, as appropriate, for psychiatric consultation, medication, nutritional consultation, educational intervention and complementary medicine services.
